RECAP: LONDON FOOD REEL CREATION WORKSHOP 2024

April 10, 2024

I know I speak for everyone when I say that social media platforms are both a blessing and a curse. The demand is high, but so are the rewards. In my experience, what makes the real difference is consistency and developing a recognizable ” visual voice.” Our photography and Reels need to immediately communicate the point of view from which we are coming.

This is why Kimberly and I wanted to return with our successful Reel workshop; we focused on creativity and beautiful aesthetics and shared our different tools to create Reels and videos. From the long recipe Reel, learning what to focus on for the short and Reel to make content creation sustainable, fun, and inspiring!

Kimberly’s food styling demonstrations for the student’s hands-on lesson

DAY 1

The students learned the basics of camera setting for videography and assisted in the “show & tell” of a short drink recipe. I explained in detail my styling choices, the colour compositions and the key focuses of a short recipe video that doesn’t take hours to make. We discussed how to record the clips to cut the time for the editing process.

The students could immediately apply the notion in the hands-on practice session. In the afternoon, they moved to create transitions, GIF and stop-motion. Kimberly, who is so incredible with her ability to teach her skills with incredible clarity, demonstrated clever techniques for creating engaging reels in minutes, coordinating the music to the actions, and creating voiceovers.

The beautiful students learned the ins and outs of editing content on their phones/tablets with free and pay-for apps to create show-stopping short videos. Understanding key short-form video trends and overwhelm-proof ways to create and upload videos for Instagram under Kim’s fantastic guidance.

DAY 2

On day two, we explored how to create a beautiful recipe Reel of a beautiful Pie, learning what is worth to capture of a recipe, how to make beautiful moments and give the Reel rytm. Learning how to create slow motion.

  • Students created a cinematographic recipe reel focusing on romantic visual storytelling.
  • Learned how to capture a beautiful moment that makes the recipe unique, cande smoke and a beautiful swirl of sugar dusting
  • Students had the opportunity for Q&A
  • And learn how to edit, focusing on cropping the actions for quick and smooth transitions.
  • We know the two days were full of information to retain and challenging hands-on lessons. So, I also included in the material to take home preproduction summary PDFs, my very own Reel planner that I use for my client’s content production, and a screen recording of the editing session with PremierPro/ Da Vinci.

A big thank you goes to our assistant @twinsinmykitchen and to our sponsors (all women run businesses) :
